Q&A with Jen
I write in a variety of genres, but my romance tends to be New Adult contemporary. I love writing NA because the college years are such a vital transitional time, and I also love writing in a genre where the rules and boundaries are still being established.
When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?
I've been writing as long as I can remember. I used to fill notebooks when I was a kid with stories and poems, and I'm so thankful that I've pursued that passion!
Romance is one of the popular selling genres in today’s market, what makes your book stand out from the rest?
Although I'm a sucker for a fairy tale ending, not all of my romances promise a HEA...at least, not at the start of the series ;)
Give us an insight into your main character(s). What does he/she/they do that is so special?
In What Happens in London, Sarah starts out very much in her shell. She's had a rough childhood, and her first leap into adulthood isn't going so well, either. What's special about her is that she works really hard not to let her past dictate her future: she doesn't want to be held back, and I think that takes a lot of bravery.
What do you consider to be your best accomplishment?
That's a tough one! I think finishing my BA; I was the first in my family to go to college, and that is still something that's really important to me.
What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?
I continue to be surprised by the way my characters take on lives of their own. I'm a pantser, so I don't usually have more than a vague plan when I start a story, and my characters continue to surprise me.
Do you have any unique talents or hobbies?
I don't know if it's unique, but I've been practicing yoga for over a decade, and I also teach yoga classes and workshops whenever I can.
What can we expect from you in the future?
This fall, the third book in my YA Red Magic series will be released from Month9Books, and after that...more stories!
What advice would you give to aspiring authors?
I've said it before, but I still believe it's true: drop the aspiring and just write! No one but you can validate your work and your worth, and no one but you can tell your story.
Here’s a tough one, if you had the choice, would you rather have negative reviews or none at all?
Oh, man, that is tough. I guess I'd rather have negative reviews, since that means that people are reading and thinking about my work, even if they disagree with it!
